FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- Police currently have a warrant for the arrest of Jeremiah Jones who was charged Thursday with battery and criminal recklessness after he allegedly threw an adjustable wrench, or channel locks, at a four-year-old girl in February.
According to court documents an argument between Jones and his father, James, over tools became physical when he threw the tool at his dad, but hit the girl instead.
James Jones told police his wife and granddaughter got in between the two to separate them while they were arguing. When the argument ended, James said he turned away from Jeremiah until he heard his wife say, "Jeremy, No!" James said as he turned back around, Jeremiah threw the tool.
The girl was initially take to Dupont Hospital, but then transferred to Lutheran Hospital where she underwent surgery on her head. She was then put into an induced coma.
The surgery removed an egg size piece of her brain and a titanium mesh was placed over the hole in her skull. The girl also suffered a collapsed lung and had to be put on a ventilator.
During an interview with police, court documents said Jones initially said he threw the channel locks at his father's feet and did not throw them with any type of force that would cause injury to anyone. He eventually admitted when he threw the tool, he did hit the girl.
According to the Allen County Sheriff, Jones has not been arrested yet.
