While we are building a web app that plays with the idea of a cup phone, the guys over at Monkey Wrench Design from San Francisco, California, are actually building the real thing. However, unlike the cup phones that we played with as a child, these gentlemen are packing technology into their cans to create the next generation of canned communication.

They dubbed their project “Can over IP technology”. We found their project on Kickstarter. I honestly first though it was a spoof, another meme in the making. After reading their pitch and watching their video I quickly discovered that this is not meant for a few quick laughs over the internet, these guys are running their business, and having a blast doing so. While I must add that they are into monkey business, because they sport an attractive red monkey for their logo, they state: “we make real things, from real stuff, for real people.”

They have several pledging options, but for $37 you get your very own can phone, and a button. Their goal is to gather $30,000 worth of pledges by May 27th 2012. We absolutely have to have one. We think these guys are awesome and the can phones are awesome. They start their story by stating how simple life was when communicating just required a couple of cans and a twine string. We couldn’t agree more, and we hope to reflect that simplicity in Cupfone as well. Now I have to go order my can. Can you imagine how cool this thing will look with a Cupfone sticker on it. It’s just one of those possessions that makes a person interesting.
