I had my front end apart to chrome my triple trees. No, I did not replace them, I had the existing ones chromed because I wanted to keep the front end rake of the 02-06 VRSCA, not get the 2* reduced rake of the newer part. That means I kept the aluminum stem. There was galvanic corrosion that got on the lower bearing, so I replaced the bearings and races while everything was apart.
I have done fall-away a number of times using what is now a custom brass drift (due to some machining to flatten it and sharpen the tip). It will fit in the clearance under the top triple clamp by sliding the handlebar/clamp assembly up slightly. It does the trick, but this method just seems risky. The brass doesn't chew up the star nut cogs, but one slip and you'll be scraping powder coating off your frame neck, or gouging chrome or god knows what else.
Has anyone found a spanner tool that will grab that star nut, even if it means sliding the bars and triple clamp up an inch or more to access. I have two adjustable Snap-On spanners, (the hook wrench style), and I just can't get a good bite. The star nut is nearly recessed into the neck by the time you are close to proper adjustment, and its an ackward angle for the spanner to bite on it.
I saw this on eBay.

Looks like it might work?? Would love to hear of a specific product or link to a product that someone can say they have used and it works.
Thanks
